Vittorio Bertazzoni Sr founds SMEG (acronym for ‘Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla’) in his birthplace, Guastalla (RE), operating throughout the provinces of Parma, Mantova and Reggio Emilia.
In 1955, SMEG presents its first own-brand kitchen, called Elisabeth.
In 1963, SMEG launches LEDA, its first washing machine.
In 1970, SMEG patents NIAGARA, the first 14-place setting dishwasher.
In 1971, SMEG begins its production of built-in appliances, in particular ovens and hobs, the cornerstone products on which the company has built its history.
Smeg commissions Franco Maria Ricci to design a new logo. A designer and editor with a strong sense of art, he draws a line that recalls the burners of a hob, the round knobs of an oven, and at the same time, evokes a sense of perfection with a nod to mathematical infinity.
Smeg sponsors the Ferrari team, which races with the legendary driver, Gilles Villeneuve.
In 1982, SMEG begins the production of professional ovens for Bars, Catering and food service. This would soon be followed by the production of professional dishwashers.
In 1985, the Smeg Instruments division is created, dedicated to hospitals, medical and dental labs.
Smeg Instruments presents the first machine dedicated to washing, GW3000.
Smeg Instruments presents the GW4000, and then the GW4000DS, with a washing and drying program.
Introducing the GW5000 series, larger in size, with multiple washing cycles and a specific detergent cabinet.
The GW6000 hits the market, offering an increased height and capacity.
Guido Canali designs the Smeg Headquarters, which receives the Honourable Mention of the “Gold Medal for Italian Architecture” Award in 2006.
Products in the line are further segmented into the hospital sector (with BLUE displays) and the laboratory sector (with GREY displays).
Faced with a particularly demanding market in terms of performance and flexibility, Smeg Instruments launches a new range of professional refrigeration products.
Smeg Instruments presents its first washing machines with glass opening and automatic closure.
The basic line is born, a series of machines featuring a smart design for simpler operations with excellent washing performance
New large-sized models ideal for multiple installations enrich the washing range. Free-standing machines designed for large laboratories and sterilisation units with cleanroom.
Again in 2019, SMEG announces the acquisition of La Pavoni, an historical Milanese company known for its production of coffee machines since 1905.
Smeg becomes a majority shareholder of FRI.MED. S.r.l., a medical refrigeration company.
